Ferrari has just unveiled their successor to the LaFerrari and the F line - The Ferrari F80.
The F80 marks 80 years of the Ferrari brand as the name suggests. It is designed with both historic elements and a futuristic style at the same time. According to Flavio Manzoni, the chief design officer, the design is influenced by the 60's space race, however there are subtle nods to older Ferraris like the F40 and the 312PB.
The powertrain is similar to the one of Ferrari's current Endurance hypercar - the 499P with MGU-K and MGU-H elements seen in Formula 1
As expected, there is no V12 or anything of the sort powering the F80. Instead, it is equipped with a 120-degree 3.0 litre turbocharged V6, which pushes out 888 horsepower on it's own. The turbochargers are electrically assisted, to ensure there is no delay delivering full boost pressure when you push the gas pedal.
Hybrid power is the name of the game nowadays - and the F80 follows the same trend. Three electric motors assist the V6 - two in the front, and one mounted between the engine and the gearbox. The three together add 296 horsepower to the system. This brings the total power up to an insane 1,184hp. Standstill to 100km/h is done in a more than respectful time of 2.15 seconds. Top speed? Limited to 350 km/h.
The aerodynamic aspect of the F80 is important to note as well. The floorpan is complete in carbon fiber, keeping the weight low, and the airflow under the car clean, enabling the use of the ground effect to create, in tandem with the diffuser and the rear wing, just over one ton of downforce at 250 km/h. The active suspension will ensure that the car is always in optimal conditions when it comes to maintaining the ground effect working well.
The black bar in the front of the car, reminiscent of the Dodici Cilindri presented earlier this year, is both a design choice, transforming the look of the nose, as well as an aerodynamic device.
Inside - according to Ferrari, it was designed not as a two seater - but instead a 1+. Everything is driver-oriented. There are more physical buttons than expected, if the 296 was taken for comparison, and a simple centre console. The driver's seat is set a little bit ahead of the passenger seat.
The price tag? 3.6 Million.. All 799 units to be produced have already been sold, of course to existing Ferrari clients who make the cut.
What is next? Who knows. However, Ferrari just put about 3 billion euros in the bank, with this future classic. However, we wonder if there is an Aperta version coming soon?
Interestingly, the Ferrari garnered a decent amount of attention, meanwhile nobody seems really interested in McLaren's 1200hp W1, the successor to the legendary F1.
