A few weeks ago, we had a magical experience organised by our Special Events Department. In previous years, we had visited the British Museum in London, the Vatican, the Louvre, and Chernobyl. It was not going to be easy to top the previous Special Events.
However, what was ahead of us was truly next-level. On November 6th, the group congregated in no other place but Cairo, Egypt. We arrived at the fabulous Marriott Mena House Hotel, directly next to the Great Pyramid of Giza. What followed this evening was a fantastic Egyptian dinner and a briefing from our team of guides.
The following morning, we started early. The first stop on our itinerary was a completely privatised tour of The Egyptian Museum in Cairo. It is also the most important museum of Egyptian culture, and it houses one of the most coveted artefacts from the area - The Mask of Tutankhamun. Among many others.
It was then time to move on into the heart of Cairo city. We took a shuttle to the Khan el-Khalili bazaar to experience the vibe of a local market in the very centre of this fascinating historic city.
It was filled with all sorts of items and interesting characters, anything from clothing, jewellery, tapestries, lamps, food, you name it. We would finish our tour with a cup of tea from the local bar before heading to lunch.
After lunch, it was time to visit the Great Egyptian Museum for a special tour. Even though the museum is not yet officially open to the public, we managed to get inside this very imposing building. Even from the outside, it screams grandeur; from the inside, it is lined with many Egyptian artefacts from various periods.
The newly built museum overlooks the Pyramids, and staying true to its name, it is the largest museum in the world, at 490 000 square metres of floor area, which dwarfs the previous record-holder, the Louvre at 73 000 square metres.
After the Great Egyptian Museum it was time for the cherry on top. Not one, but three.
We took our shuttles in between and past the Pyramids, to the Sphinx, which was privatised for the group. Here, we could get up close and personal, so close in fact, that we could stand between its front legs for a photo-op like no other in the world.
Later, just as the sun went down, we assembled in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza, which was also privatised for the group, for a history lesson from our incredibly charismatic guide before being allowed to go in, and explore the mysterious insides of one of the wonders of the ancient world.
We then went back to the hotel, before closing the event with an absolute bang.. We had a unique, served dinner at the foot of the pyramids, lit up on this wonderful night in colourful lights, just for us.
As with all special events, we only organise each once. The next special event, set for the autumn of 2025, will be announced during the winter. To be the first to know, please sign up for our newsletter.
