Finally some good news. During an official message on Saturday morning, the Italian government declared to open the country's border for tourism already on the 3rd of June. This is almost two weeks earlier than the predicted date, which was 15 of June.
The hotel owners we have spoken to were taken by surprise. They are now rushing to open, calling in staff, stocking their supply of champagne and changing wifi-passwords. Sadly, the majority will not be ready as early as the 3rd of June. Many, including Splendido Portofino, still indicate the 16th of June as the first possible arrival.
Restaurants and bars open already this Monday, on the 18th of May, although with reduced capacity, which absolutely no one will follow.
Many airplane carriers are resuming operations. Lufthansa is re-starting its regular flights to and from Italy in the beginning of June.
While the season is now compressed from May - September to only July - September, the demand for hotel rooms in the little season that remains is absurd. Some hotels are able to double their prices. This is a good sign. It means that many have not given up their plans to travel this year.
