As you might have heard, Geneva Auto Salon has been canceled. The Swiss government has decided to ban all public gatherings over 1 000 people until the 15th of March.
Geneva Auto Salon is the most important supercar show each year. There is usually hundreds of new highlights from both European and overseas manufacturers. While the auto industry quickly moved to streaming for their presentations and premieres, the show will go on - but on the internet.
It is no secret that the Geneva Auto Salon has been struggling with both falling numbers of exhibitors and the number of visitors. Lamborghini canceled their participation before Christmas. Lotus last show was in 2018.
Is this the final straw? It depends. The general trend in the industry is to move away from the big auto salons and trade shows. From some perspectives, it is better to organise your own event for an important new car. You get your invitees total attention and they wont wander off to a competitors stand afterwards.
Furthermore, you can do a much more in-depth presentation of your product with test drives and such. You can focus on quality on a selected list of guests that are potential buyers of your expensive car, instead of wasting time with the general public that cant afford a brand new Ferrari anyway.
Also, setting the time for the presentation NOT to be during an important trade show makes a lot of sense. It is much easier to get your message through in the media when there is less or zero competition with other car manufacturers. This translates to more text and larger pictures of your car in the magazines, and possibly much more airtime on TV.
So, is this the final blow to the greatest auto show in the world? We certainly hope not. Besides showing new cars, the auto salon is an important annual social function.
Here, the entire industry, from Hyundai to Koenigsegg, meet. There is mingling, partnerships founded and lots of new relationships being made. This part of the show can not move to the internet yet, and it is why we will certainly see a Geneva Auto Salon in 2021.
Here is a list of the most important new cars that were scheduled for Geneva Auto Salon next week. Many of the presentations, but not all, have moved online.
The Aston Martin DBX and the Vantage Roadster were heading to the show. Now, the presentation will be held online instead.
McLaren will show the 765LT, the 620R and most probably a completely new hybrid car based on the sport series platform (the 540-570-600 cars)
For Ferrari, the new Roma would be the most important car on the stand this year. Also, there is the 812 GTS, the F8 Spider and the SF90.
Canceled Geneva before Christmas. They are most probably planning a private event for the new Huracan EVO RWD.
Say hello to the first car with the hybrid powertrain. Their iconic V8 coupled with a large electric motor gives a monstrous 800 hp total power. The first car is the Mercedes-AMG GT73.
The Swedish manufacturer Koenigsegg were going to show their new 2+2 hypercar with a cool new hybrid drive with at least 1 500 hp. There was also rumours about a Jesko Mission 500 car on the stand.
New US manufacturer was going to show their Czinger 21C hypercar, with 1 250 hp and a 0-400-0 km/h time in just 29 seconds. That is faster than a Koenigsegg Regera. The new car is interesting from a manufacturing perspective, too, while it is 3D printed.
The Croatian hypercar manufacturer Rimac was supposed to unveil the production-spec version of the 1914-horsepower strong C_Two EV hypercar together with a new name. Rimac stated that "show or no show, we'll share our news soon!".
Our favourite car on the 2020 Geneva Auto Salon is a Toyota. Low cost, high performance and four wheel drive teleports us back in time to the golden age of Japanese engineering - when Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 6 TME and Subaru WRX STi cars ruled the winter roads in Sweden.
If the little Toyota is just half as fun as those giants, then we have a winner here. We want it.
