A very pretty coastal road between Savona and Finale Ligure
Via Aurelia (SS1) is an ancient road that the Romans built two thousand years ago. It went from Rome to Ventimiglia. Ventimiglia also meant "twenty miles". Thus, twenty Roman miles from Rome.
The SS1 on the eastern part in Liguria consists of Passo del Bracco and the coastal road from Sestri Levante to Genova. The SS1 on the western part goes from Genova all the way to Ventimiglia and the French border.
The best of the western part is the stretch between Savona and Finale Ligure. It is a spectacular drive on an edge of a cliff hanging above the sea.
Avoid going through major cities on the coast. It is frustrating and quite time consuming. Also, don't bother with any other coastal roads on the western Riviera section, between San Remo and Savona. This is the best one and that's it.
A perfect companion on your next road trip to the most beautiful country in the world.
