The famous old bridge in Florence
The aptly name Ponte Vecchio - translated to Old Bridge in English was originally built at the turn of the millenium approximately in the late 990s. It is the first known crossing of the Arno river in Florence since Ancient Roman times. It connected the two riverbanks at the narrowest point.
It suffered several destructive events due to floods early on, but it has stood in it's current form since the 1300s. What makes it interesting is it's superstructure, which is full of little shops, which have stood there since it's building early on.
Initially, all the shops along the bridge were butcheries, however in the 16th century, a decree was made outlawing butchers from selling on the bridge, and only allowing goldsmiths and jewellers. This changed the look of the bridge significantly, and remains so even today, as the bridge is full of jewellers and watch stores.
It is a quite unique structure, making it a worthwhile sight to see if you're in Florence. Take note this is a pedestrian-only bridge.
