Just south of Naples lies one of Italy's most famous tourist destinations – the archaeological excavation of the Roman city of Pompeii. Haven't been here? Then forget everything you think you know about this place.

First of all, the excavated area is huge. About a hundred times as big as you think. A regular tourist visit to Pompeii takes about three hours. Then, with the guide, you will only skim a little bit on the surface among the ruins of the old city.

If you want a thorough visit to Pompeii, it takes – drumroll – three days. Just so you understand how enormous the excavation really is. It is a whole city that has been dug up and dusted off – not just a couple of houses and a crossroad.
