A unique hotel experience where the rooms are ancient caves
Matera is located in the eastern part of Basilicata, at the border with Apulia. The Grotte della Civita hotel is a very unique hotel. Hotel? Good question. Actually, it's a series of caves. The caves have been inhabited for thousands of years. During the 1950s, the caves were evacuated for sanitary reasons. Those who lived there did not have access to running water or electricity.
However, the place was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since then, the caves have been modernized and are today a truly unique hotel experience. To- day, these caves are a five star hotel.
Your cave has a living room, bedroom and candlelight. You don't have to worry now all modernities are installed toilets, showers, electricity and wifi. However, the feeling is still very special.
Do you remember the comics called Barbapapa from when you were a child? This is how it feels to live here. Great fun and quite unique. Maybe not for everyone. For those of you who are a little adventurous and want to experience something special, this is absolutely unbeatable. Prices start from EUR 350 for a "double cave" in high season. The caves are very popular - book well in advance.
